Incoming ������ý President Anne D’Alleva met with student groups, faculty, staff and community leaders during an introductory press conference and reception on Monday, Oct. 6.

D’Alleva, who was named ������ý’s eighth president by the SUNY Board of Trustees in August, will officially begin her duties on Nov. 1, 2025.

“As a native New Yorker, I’ve known ������ý for a long time,” D’Alleva said. “Everyone in New York knows the excellence of ������ý and the impact of ������ý.

“I did give a guest lecture here in 2011 and I had a great time with the art history faculty and students, so I have a first-hand appreciation for the quality of what ������ý does.”

D’Alleva spent the past 26 years at the University of Connecticut in progressively more responsible roles, first as a faculty member in art history, then as dean of Fine Arts and most recently as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. She has vast experience in public higher education, with a focus on student success, multidisciplinary and collaborative efforts between academic departments and external partners and inspiring engagement from alumni.

“������ý is one of our great public universities,” D’Alleva said. “There’s nothing more impactful in American society and beyond than our great public universities. It starts with our mission of service and engagement, our mission of transformative education and our mission of groundbreaking research.

“We are the engine of prosperity and success in the U.S. and beyond. ������ý has a wonderful role to play in that regard, in the state, the nation and beyond.”

Starting in November, D’Alleva plans to embark on a listening tour to meet as many members of the ������ý community as possible. She is aiming to hear from students, faculty and staff as well as alumni, donors, elected officials, other leaders in higher education and leaders in the local Broome County area.

“It’s important for me to hear from people and have that dialogue,” she said. “This is truly a listening tour where I want to hear, broadly construed, from ������ý’s community about their hopes and dreams, their aspirations and their concerns. That’s the only way I can get to know the university.”

D’Alleva plans to share the findings from her listening tour on social media and through a dedicated website to further engage the University community. Details on where to find that information will be forthcoming.

Following the listening tour, in spring 2026, D’Alleva will launch a new round of strategic planning for the University. Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald Hall has agreed to lead the strategic planning process, which will be guided by the information and feedback collected from the listening tour. D’Alleva aims to unveil the strategic plan to the University community in fall 2026. It will follow the Road Map strategic plan, which guided ������ý since 2013 on topics including research, learning, community engagement, strategic investments and internationalization.

D’Alleva said she is encouraged to get started at ������ý largely because of the enthusiasm of the members of the University community she has already had a chance to meet.

“When I came here during the interview process, one of the things that so impressed me was how happy people are to be here,” she said. “They are optimistic, happy and all in on the ������ý experience and the impact of ������ý. That’s priceless. It carries over into all relationships with the University, be it the local community, the SUNY system and beyond. ������ý’s excellence is grounded in its people.”

Harvey Stenger, who has led ������ý since 2012, will step down from his duties on Oct. 31. He introduced D’Alleva and noted how they have been working together in recent weeks as D’Alleva learns more about the University.

“This does feel really excellent to have this transition occur,” Stenger said. “I said to Anne when we first met, my job for has been being president for the last 13 years. My last job is to make sure that you are the best president that ������ý has ever had.”

After the press conference, D’Alleva was joined by University leaders at a reception in the Osterhout Concert Theater lobby and took a tour of the campus.

Tour stops included:

• Science II to meet students, faculty and staff involved in a First-Year Research Immersion (FRI) lab
  
• ������ý Art Museum to meet with director Diane Butler and students
  
• The Fleishman Career Center for a visit with students in a Career Exploration Course
  
• The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Tutorial Center
  
• Student Culinary Council and Residential Life staff meetings in the MarketPlace at the University Union
  
• And a tour of the Baseball Stadium Complex and Fieldhouse, as well as a meeting with men’s and women’s student-athletes
